The variety of festivals celebrated in India are the true expression of its rich culture and traditions. Diwali

Diwali is one of the most important religious festivals of India among Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities. Diwali is celebrated in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar (October or November), Diwali is the festival of lights, every year on Diwali Indians light up their homes to welcome the goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth). One of the main rituals on Diwali is to worship Goddess Lakshmi.

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is one of the major festivals of India especially in the North and Eastern parts of India. In the northern part of India, this one-day festival is celebrated as Navratri. In the state of West Bengal, this festival is celebrated as Drug Puja.

Dussehra is one of the most popular festivals in India and each state has a unique way of celebrating this festival. In the northern parts of India, Ram Leela is organized for nine consecutive days before this grand festival. Ram Leela is a theater act of the mythological story associated with this festival which is enacted by local artists. Ram Leela is organized in various communities both at major and minor levels where people come to witness this nine-day theatrical performance.

Holi

Holi is the most popular festival of India. Families and friends sing, dance and play with colors wearing mostly white clothes on this lovely festival. Holi is played by throwing dry and wet colors on each other. On Holi special sweets known as Gujiyas are made and enjoyed by all. Other specialty foods and drinks include thandai, pakora and dahi bhalla.

This famous festival of India also has a mythological connection with it. This is the mythological story of Hiranyakashipu and his son Prahlad. Hiranyakashipu was an evil king who wanted the gods to worship him but his son Prahlad became a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Christmas

The birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated all over India with gaiety and wonderful joy. The warm smell of walnut cake can come in every home. As if Santa is held captive by a confetti of caps, Christmas sees a proliferation of caps and reindeer headgear adorning the heads of citizens. Many people decorate the Christmas tree in their homes with colorful wires and hanging balls. People also visit the church on this auspicious festival to seek the holy blessings of Christ.
